| "idol" "Gear" magazine October By Renee Kaplan "She can see, hear and move much better and faster than humans... and the government would have her killed if she was ever found. They want her, plus other genetically enhanced people, to stay a secret," says Jessica Alba of her role in Titanic director James Cameron's futuristic TV drama, Dark Angel, which debuts in January. She seems strangely well-suited to the role: if anyone accused her of being genetically enhanced, well, it would be easy to understand why. Jessica started young as a TV actor (Flipper. circa 1995 at age 14, some Beverly Hills 90210 after that), and made turns in a few teen movies you wouldn't know, and one you might - this year's Never Been Kissed, with Drew Barrymore. Then suddenly, the director of the decade's most Oscar-gorging, box office-grossing hit decides to cast her as the lead in his first TV venture - and to sign her to a five-year contract pending what will undoubtedly be the X-Files-type success of the first season. And did we mention she's only 18? Despite having been plucked out of the primordial soup of teen starlets by the self-proclaimed "King of the World" to be toned and aerobicized by personal trainers into futuristic physical perfection for her role in his show, Jessica is also working with still other star-making directors. This summer, she made a film called Paranoia with director John Duigan - the director who helped launch Nicole Kidman's career by casting her in Flirting at Jessica's very age. Oh well, secret's out. |
